In a call back to his threatening Aunt story from earlier, he asks him again, “What should my father do?” So that’s probably a sign that the Cartel is not to be trifled with.ĭel calls Byrde, who is driving away.
When she returns from doing this, she finds Del waiting there.īyrde pulls up to the apartment just in time to see Sugarwood’s body smashing down into the pavement. Sugarwood encourages her to clean out the family’s bank accounts before the government freezes their assets. “Sugar,” as in, “sweetheart” and “wood,” as in, I’m dry-heaving right now. It’s revealed that “Sugarwood” (cue Peter Griffin again) is her pet name for her lover. Surprise! She’s the lady from the homemade porno. Knowledge and power for the win! Unfortunately, for all his fight, Marty is undercut by his wife, who is observed in the next scene meeting with her lover at his fancy high-rise. In one of the most freakin’ cool moments of the episode (and there are many), he threatens to call the FDIC if the banks don’t get him eight mill overnight. Marty puts his house on the market and begins to call banks in order to liquidate his firm. Marty, ever our plucky anti-hero, saves himself at the last second by producing an Ozark brochure, convinces Del to let him pay back the money Liddell and friends stole and then conducts a new business plan for him down in the Ozarks. In turn, he shoots the rest of the group, ditching their bodies in acid à la 10 Cloverfield Lane before turning on Byrde. In a fun little display of power, Del shoots the realtor, proving that his bite is, indeed, worse than his bark. Obviously, the question of whether Aunt Carlotta should be fired was largely rhetorical. Marty magically dodges having to give his opinion on the matter. The others claim Del’s dad should have gone easy on Carlotta. Del is there for a shakedown.ĭel asks how he should punish the group for skimming from his profits by telling a thinly veiled story of a worker, Aunt Carlotta, who stole from his father’s business. Twist! If you didn’t watch the trailer…Marty is in bed with the Cartel. He meets a ragtag group there, consisting of himself and his partner, a realtor that Liddell is seeing romantically, a father-son trucking team, and a man named Del (Esai Morales). Marty gets a call from Liddell, and he trucks out to a local warehouse. He actually meets with a prostitute, who harps on cheating and may have actually imaginary. Next, we get our first glimpse at Byrde’s seemingly typical family: Wendy (the captivating Laura Linney) is a boring Costco homemaker, Charlotte is an angsty teen, and Jonah is the shy baby brother.Īs the family unwinds after dinner time, Wendy plays on her iPad as Marty returns to a silent viewing of the video he had.
Liddell uses the indiscretion to highlight Byrde’s career shortcomings, urging him to reach for loftier goals and maybe even check out the Ozarks, a location Liddell has been scouting for his own ventures.Īs Peter Griffin would say, “Oh, that’s why they call it that.” It isn’t until his partner, Bruce Liddell, interrupts that he abandons the reckless behavior. The next scene opens on cool, collected Marty watching a homemade porno while he meets with clients at his financial advising firm. Who knew finances could be so petrifying? This is a horror story. And, this horror story is complete with a sky-high body count, a terrifying villain, and a sense of fear that its audience can relate to on an all too personal level. This isn’t your run-of-the-mill family drama. And only fifteen percent of the population is on track to fund even one year of retirement.” Twenty-five percent have no savings at all. “Half of all American adults have more credit card debt than savings. This opener establishes Byrde’s unique perspective and also serves to scare the piss out of viewers:

Money is the name of the game in Ozark, and Marty Byrde knows how to play. In a dark subversion of his Arrested Development character, he is chilling as the everyman, ready to forsake all in the name of family and fortune. Here, Bateman establishes himself as the ever-calm, ever-calculated Marty Byrde. Ozark opens on a dark waterfront, with Jason Bateman’s voice: “Money is, at its essence, that measure of a man’s choices.”
